Canon officially launches three new cameras today: the mirrorless EOS M50, and entry-level EOS 1500D and EOS 3000D. They also took the time to launch the Speedlite 470EX-AI flash.
Canon presents their new products at KDU Glenmarie. It seems a fitting location, seeing as the three cameras on show are entry-level to mid-range. They are aimed towards photography beginners and amateurs looking to upgrade their equipment. Students from KDU also helped to set up the launch event.
Jeffrey Kung, Head of Consumer Imaging and Information Division, notes that Canon are beginning to expand towards mirrorless cameras after years of focusing on traditional DSLRs. The EOS M50 is Canon’s first camera to have DIGIC-8; it is also Canon’s first 4K mirrorless camera.
As for the EOS 1500D and 3000D, it is part of them expanding their reach towards younger Malaysians. Together with the EOS Youth Ambassador program, Kung hopes these affordable, entry-level DSLRs can help educate, guide and support a new generation of photographers in Malaysia. He adds that by lowering the cost of entry into photography will ensure Malaysia has a healthy and positive future in photography.
Several members of the EOS Youth Ambassador program had a chance to show off their photos, taken with the EOS 1500D and 3000D. Canon also got professional photographers, including Andrew Koh, to showcase the EOS M50 and the Speedlite 470EX-AI flash.
Specs-wise, the highlight of the launch is definitely the EOS M50. The M50 is Canon’s first mirrorless camera that can record in 4K. You could also film a video and grab a frame for a 4K still-image. There’s also a 3-inch vari-angle LCD touchscreen for all your selfie and vlogging needs. Under the hood, the latest DIGIC-8 image processor allows clear images despite poor lighting, especially together with the 24.1-megapixel APS-C sized CMOS sensor. The dual pixel CMOS AF keeps things in focus, even fast-moving objects. The M50 also has an ISO speed of 25,600, expandable to 51200. All this is on top of cloud access between the M50 and your smartphone through Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC.
While it doesn’t have the most top-range features, the EOS 1500D and EOS 3000D are definitely still respectable cameras in their own right. These two cameras are very affordable, entry level additions to Canon’s DSLR range. Both have a DIGIC 4+ image processor and a 24.1 and 18-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor for the 1500D and 3000D respectively. With a standard ISO of 6400, expandable to 12800, full HD video recording, and a ‘Features Guide’ for beginners, this camera is definitely bang-for-your-buck if you’re a student or someone looking to pick up photography.
First announced back at CES, the Speedlite 470EX-AI is the world’s first AI flash. The AI automatically adjusts motors and sensors in the flash, providing optimal angle and light level for the perfect flash. It’s great for both beginners and professionals too. For beginners, you have the full auto mode. The AI will take full control and guide you towards the best flash settings and angles for perfect photos. For professionals meanwhile, semi-auto mode prioritises your settings and preferences. The AI will remember how you want it to be and adjust to fit, even if you move about.
The Speedlite 470EX-AI unfortunately does not have a price just yet. It will only be available in Malaysia by late May.
