Bad Rabbit Creates Havoc In Europe

There’s a new threat in town and it goes by the name Bad Rabbit, no its not something you can go to the doctors after dining at restaurant, this one infects your PC and holds you for ransom. Now since we’ve got your attention, lets delve deeper into this latest virus scare.

Bad Rabbit pretends to be a Flash update and upon unsuspected users download the file it will encrypt victims’ files and demands ransom from them. While the name Bad Rabbit might sound funny but it is a serious ransomware attack.

According to data, most of the victims targeted by these attacks are located in Russia. Kaspersky and anti-virus solution company out of Russia, has noticed similar but fewer attacks in Ukraine, Turkey and Germany. The ransomware infects devices through a number of hacked Russian media websites and has been a targeted attack against corporate networks, using methods similar to those used during the ExPetr attack.

The security company also found Bad Rabbit ransomware attack has clear ties with ExPetr attack that took place in June this year. According to their analysis, the hashing algorithm used in the Bad Rabbit attack is similar to the one used by ExPetr.  Experts have also found that both attacks use the same domains; and similarities in the respective source codes indicate that the new attack is linked to the creators of ExPetr.

So far more than 200 200 targets, located in Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and Germany have been attacked. All of the attacks took place on October 24, and no new attacks have been detected since then.
