BBC headlined it as being a sad day for UK tech, while many others (those outside Britain) see this as a positive venture for both parties. Post Brexit, company’s in Britain have become attractive for the picking due to the drop in pound and owners looking for new markets to expand their business until the uncertainty in Europe settles down. This economic situation caused Softbank make a quick move to buy a company with huge potential and one of the best run tech company in UK, ARM.

Valued at 23.4 billion pounds, the deal will the biggest tech purchase by a foreign firm in the country, with this acquisition the Japanese investment firm will now become the owner of the biggest mobile chip architecture design company in the world. ARM had sold over 15 billion chip in 2015 a huge order book compared to rival chip maker Intel. The American tech giant, has been reeling on the loss of the smartphone market and has been battling to regain its reputation as the largest microprocessor manufacturer with a series of its own mobile chipsets and IOT solutions.

Financial Times London, viewed the deal as a bet Softbank is making on future technology, with ARM playing a pivotal role in internet of things movement. Both Samsung and Apple rely on the technology provided by the Cambridge based private held company. Softbank has made big bets in the past and struck gold, with Alibaba and Vodafone, both garnering huge profits for investors.

The question now is how Intel will see the new development, ARM has been a target by Intel but has it again missed the boat or will see Softbank stifle the growth of its number one competitor.
