Apple’s Latest MacOS Is Here But You Might Want To Avoid Updating If You’re a DJ

Your Entire Music Library Will Be Wiped Out

Apple’s much anticipated OS update, MacOS 10.15 Catalina, is finally upon us, and with it, cool features such as Sidecar-which allows you to use your iPad as an extra screen for your macbook, Apple Arcade, Voice Control, Screen Time monitoring and Mac Catalyst, which will help third-party developers port apps to Apple Macs.

However, Catalina is not without it’s fallback’s, one of which being the fact that it puts the final nail in the coffin for iTunes. Now, I understand that the death of iTunes was met with mixed responses. Some people thought it was long overdue, others.. perhaps filled with nostalgia, were devastated. I was among the latter.

Regardless, while the fission of iTunes into three separate apps may be a new and better way to organize and consume media, it poses one HUGE problem for one very particular group of Mac users: DJ’s. Macbook’s and iTunes are a popular choice among DJs when it comes to organizing their music library.

Now, the problem lies in the fact that the latest Apple Music App has a new library format, hence it will lose XML file support. XML file support is insanely popular among DJ’s as it helps immensely when it comes to sorting tracks into playlists as well as allowing users to seamlessly transmit data between apps.

Majority of the more popular DJ apps such as Traktor and Rekordbox read XML files and iTunes in it’s 20 years of existence has pretty much cemented itself as THE way for DJs to sort through their massive libraries.

So here’s a PSA to all DJs out there: Do NOT update your Macbook to the latest OS. Well, not yet at least. Surely in time, developers will come up with fixes, but till then? Best stick to Mojave OS, lest you want all your hard work erased in one fell swoop.
