Apple’s Bringing Back Flip Phones?

It has been reported that Apple received a patent for a foldable smartphone that outlines an electronic device with ‘a flexible display’ and the capability to fold. However, this is not the first hint we’ve been given of giant smartphones company bringing back foldable phones.

Earlier in September this year, Samsung announced plans to reveal a foldable smartphone in 2018. The proposed sketches looked pretty wild, but the feat has been considered so daring that production plans have been pushed back to 2019.

Apart from that, ZTE also announced for the creation of foldable smartphones in October, but it might not be as impressive as what Samsung and Apple has in mind.

According to Apple’s patent, the device’s support layer ‘may be formed from shape memory alloy or amorphous metal and may have openings to facilitate bending’. Earlier reports indicated that Apple’s eventual bendable screen would be OLED and the screen would be able to retracts itself like a scroll. However, the latest patent describes a display that would bend along an axis. Even with that said, the outcome is still anyone’s guess at this point.
