People residing in Ampang can call themselves City-zens when the district joins other City’s in Malaysia, when it achieves the status come next year. This well received news was delivered by Housing and Local Government Minister Zuraida Kamaruddin.

Zuraida, who is the Ampang Member of Parliament, said Ampang has achieved rapid development and is on the way to becoming a city. There are various criterias before a local council is designated to City status, among them it should have a minimum population of 500,000 and be able to collect annually RM100 million.

The Minister is also looking at improving some of the infrastructure in Ampang, among the projects being implemented are a swimming pool, a control centre, and the relocation and upgrading of food courts. There are planned to be completed by 2021 in order to fulfill some of the regulatory needs. People living here can look forward to more refinement to their neighborhoods as the councils will be ensuring the vicinity is kept alluring as a city should be.

There are currently 16 cities in Malaysia, they are Kuala Lumpur, George Town, Seberang Prai, Ipoh, Petaling Jaya, Shah Alam, Alor Setar, Johor Bharu, Melaka City, Kuala Terengganu, Kota Kinabalu, Miri, Kuching, Iskandar Puteri, Seremban and Subang Jaya.
