AirAsia Boss Shuts Down His 670k Facebook Account

AirAsia Group CEO and active social media fan, Tan Sri Tony Fernandes has announced the shutting down of his 670,000 followed Facebook page with immediate effect. The brash QPR football owner is also considering closing down his Twitter account but is choosing not to at the moment.

The decision comes amidst the growing dissatisfaction Tony feels about Facebook with the straw breaking after the Christchurch incident when the social network giant took nearly 17 minutes long to remove the live streaming of the despicable act. He believes Mark Zuckerberg and his team could have done more to stop this kind of content going up, where everyone with a smartphone or laptop can have access to graphic scenes like these. Facebook has been embroiled in many controversies for the past 2 years including selling accounts to third party and allowing agencies to take up advertisement that manipulates voting decisions but there is no regulatory body that is bold enough to stop the 2 billion user social network platform. Its lose policy and shady algorithms, means no one can fully understand how Facebook functions, and the sheer volume of daily content uploaded on its platform means no human is able to monitor the site leaving the job entirely to AI. We doubt even Mark knows whats going on his company!

Making the ultimate call must have been tough for Tony who is a keen believer in technology, starting his lowcost airlines and migrating to digital from booking to ticketing, the company was the first to embrace online booking in the country. An early Facebook account holder, he must have mulled shutting down before when himself was a victim of a scam last year when ads appeared on the social site having him promoting a new Bitcoin crytocurrency scheme along with other Malaysian tycoons. A scam to fool Malaysians to invest in a dubious program.

We wont see Tony on Facebook anymore as the page appeared when we checked, however you can keep abreast with his antics on Twitter @tonyfernandes for now!
