Adult Swim and Crunchyroll to produce Blade Runner anime series

Three studios are coming together to produce a new anime series based on Blade Runner 2049 called Blade Runner – Black Lotus. 13-episodes has been ordered and will be directed by Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama.

Shinji is known for directing the Appleseed films while Kenji is known for Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex series. Furthermore, Cowboy Bebop Director, Shinichiro Watanabe will be acting as Black Lotus’ creative producer.

All three creative companies are not releasing information on what the series will be about just yet but reports from a press release says the anime will include several existing Blade Runner characters, and the timeline of the storyline will be set in 2032.

Aramaki served as the mechanical designer on 2022 as did Sola Digital Arts, which did the computer graphics for the prequel episode. There are no announcements on the release date for the series just yet. Production is set to begin once the production of the reboot of the Ghost in the Shell is completed.

When Blade Runner — Black Lotus does air, it’ll be shown with an English dub during Adult Swim’s Toonami programming block, and it will be subtitled on Crunchyroll’s streaming service.
