Life-Saving “Skin”

Scientists from the University of Tokyo have developed a stretchable electronic sensor that could possibly be used to monitor vital signs in the future, replacing the stiff plastic sensors that doesn’t breathe every well.

These new hypoallergenic sensors are made out of a nanoscale mesh that is thin and lightweight. After facing a week of testing, the sensors did not irritate the skin, break or even leave a mark, but still successfully recorded the electrical activity of muscles with “minimal discomfort” to the user.

The electric skin was able to detect touch, temperature and pressure, which could be a game-changer as it could even improve prosthetic limbs, breathing new life to patients with physical disabilities.
