Ransomware is a malicious software that encrypts user data once hackers take control of a computer system or network, requiring a ransom to be paid for the decryption key for the safe retrieval of data. The latest high profile hit was WannaCry – a global ransomware that took down critical systems in over 200,000 organisations across 150 countries – including the National Health Service in the UK, as well as manufacturing plants and financial services. WannaCry spreads across local networks, targeting systems that have not been recently updated with the latest security updates.

Kaspersky Lab’s latest release, Kaspersky Office Security software, offers ramped up Ransomware protection for small businesses to safe guard and stay vigilant to cyberthreats, including WannaCry. The latest version of Kaspersky Small Office Security offers enriched protection against the growing threat of “cryptors”. Anti-ransomware capabilities in the System Watcher component not only block malicious encryption attempts, but also trigger an automatic backup and restore for a peace of mind.

Sylvia Ng, General Manager for SEA of Kaspersky Lab, education and information can be the best preventive strategy against emerging malware and cyberthreats, so that owners of small to medium businesses can protect their companies better from threats such as WannaCry.

“Education can be the best prevention as it encourages alertness. We want to educate our local business owners on Ransomware and how they can protect themselves and their businesses from falling victim to threat. Ransomwares like WannaCry is the latest trend for hackers to get a quick payout and there are already reports of new strains of worm-like attacks, which EUROPOL has described as ‘at an unprecedented level’. Kaspersky Lab prepare these business owners for what is coming their way,” she said.
