5 Daydreams of Technology ‘What If’s in 2021

With all the catastrophe that struck upon us in 2020, it is a bold statement that we should plan something in preparation for 2021. As bold as it may sound, 2020 let us explore various sides of technology so why don’t we try the same for 2021?

In 2020, the pandemic happened which caused the need to change our style of living, emphasising on making full use of technology. Almost every aspect of life now has been made possible after the MCO happened. Studies, working, social events as well sport industries are now deemed possible.

This wind of change has brought lots of question marks regarding what the future will be. Speaking about technology, we should always expect the unexpected because it is a world without boundaries.

Firstly, let’s see the education and professional field. 2020 witnessed the grand transformation of wellbeing of these fields. Every class and occasion that needs a rendezvous, has to shift to online video conferencing. Google Classroom also functioned well as a mecca for educators to provide materials for students. Google Teams also works well for company players to play their part in the organisation.

Hence, what if in 2021, we found another alternative to monitor an organisation easily. The introduction to Discord has made life easier as we can do lots of things there involving group engagements. What if in 2021, apps like these evolved themselves into something beyond expectations? Who can tell if this year, they are allowing hologram printed of the speaker so everyone can see who they are talking to in a clearer figure.

During MCO, online shopping became the first choice among the local shoppers. Even before that tough period, the shopping platforms such as Shopee, Lazada and Zalora have always been the household talking. Other than that, such platforms like Instagram and Facebook also have come up with initiatives to help SMEs nationwide.

It is no surprise that someday around this year, we could have had an online virtual marketplace. Yes, there are few such websites already but let’s narrow it down. Picture the market place is like The Sims where you will have your own avatar that you can control and you can ‘walk’ it to the outlets you want. Window shopping will never be this exciting, that’s guaranteed.

Entertainment also saw a new light in this challenging times. Lots of performers and studios have taken new ways to pursue the performances through online platforms. The bright side of it is the performers can interact with the audiences directly.

Surely somewhere and sometimes in future we can see virtual performances in the form of VR and AR. As we are aware, these two are no foreign for the gaming world which allows gamers to immerse themselves in the world they are playing. What if soon, we also can immerse ourselves in the show we are watching, letting us be part of the performance itself through VR? Everything’s possible, right?

The year of 2020 also marked the year where whatever certificates you have to determine your intellectual level is totally going to drain as the pandemic don’t care at all. People are losing jobs and companies are retrenching those who they thought as a liability to them. Many people are likely to change their professions due to this issue.

Because of that very issue, 2021 is going to see lots of startups making their breakthrough. According to Forbes, Peter Thiel, a venture capitalist, has supported a series of fellowship grants that encourage students to drop-out of college and start their own companies. It’s money over everything now. People are more excited to discover their potential rather than investing it to other corporations.

Last thing that we can expect to see is how social media will be vital no longer to youngsters but for every layer of society. Staying indoors last year connected us with people worldwide in an interesting way. Few social media platforms such as Tiktok and Snapchat have become mainstream and people are using it for various purposes.

In 2021, we should expect new social media coming or old social media to be resurrected. Social media is no longer for finding friends or communicating but it is already on the larger scale. People do business there, provide services and some even met the love of their life. Social media will be more broad and lots of aspects in life shall be discovered in 2021 especially if the pandemic is still not seeing the end yet.

Technology is something that is hard for you to expect as it either match your predictions or goes beyond it. In 2020, we have seen lots of potential in technology that has been unearthed, proving the limitations of the human brain. What if in 2021, we will actually see the flying cars we have always dreamed of when we were in primary school? After all, it is just a prediction, right?
