Facebook has come up with a brand new logo, but it’s not for the social media site it made it’s name for.
Facebook has been plagued with what seems like never-ending controversy lately, from their ongoing privacy issues, to it’s entry into the cryptocurrency market with Libra and of course, it’s willingness to run false political campaign ads on the social network. It’s safe to say, Mark Zuckerberg has had better days.
That being said, the company has unveiled a brand new corporate logo to represent the parent company that owns Facebook, Whatsapp & Instagram among others. The introduction of the new logo is part of Facebook’s new brand strategy, one that involves a clear distinction between Facebook the parent company and it’s family of apps.
We’ve known for a while now that the Facebook family of apps will soon come with the moniker “From Facebook” but what we didn’t know is that instead of the block-y Facebook logo we’re all used to, it will now come with the new parent company logo.
“We’re updating our company branding to be clearer about the products that come from Facebook. We’re introducing a new company logo and further distinguishing the Facebook company from the Facebook app, which will keep its own branding.”
“people should know which companies make the products they use.”
Antonio Lucio, Facebook’s chief marketing officer
What it really represents.
This whole “rebranding” thing is clearly meant to serve as a distraction from all the problems that’s plaguing the social network. Facebook’s value as a parent brand is through the roof and the need for consumers to be able to separate Facebook the social media site and Facebook the parent company is of paramount importance now more than ever. The Facebook brand needs to be protected, and what better way to do so than this, right?
The logo itself is bland and unimaginative, very much like how I’m guessing any future statements from Facebook are going to be. You can bet your bottom dollar that the response to any controversy that the company finds itself in will be met with a statement along the lines of how Facebook the company is not defined by Facebook the social network, they just happen to share the same name and controlling interests and blah blah blah.
Facebook’s new branding strategy is expected to roll out in the coming weeks, so be prepared to see the new logo on your Instagram & Whatsapp apps soon.
