It’s hard to unsee it, really..
A mere days away from the long awaited launch of the Huawei Mate 30 series of phones, the internet has blessed us with even more leaks of the devices, and this time, it’s the entire line up! According to reliable leaker Evan Blass, Huawei will be releasing four different devices in the Mate 30 series, namely the Mate 30, Mate 30 Pro, Mate 30 Lite and what looks like the Porsche Design edition of the Mate 30.
Whilst the washing machine-esque quad camera setup may be the first thing to get everyone’s attention, another detail that raises eyebrows is the fact that all 3 devices seemingly have different notches. As is the norm with smartphones these days, the Pro model is the top of the line up and the images leaked suggest that the device is set to come with a wide notch at the top, similar to that of Apple’s notch except sleeker looking.
The Mate 30 on the other hand, looks set to get a much smaller notch, with speculation suggesting that this is because the Mate 30 will include fewer sensors for facial recognition. It also seems like there will be two front facing cameras on the device as well.
Lastly, the Mate 30 Lite has appeared to receive the punch hole treatment, giving it a more full-view looking display.
It’s an interesting one, I have to say. Having three models with three different screen designs is unparalleled and could actually work in Huawei’s favour. The top of the line Mate 30 Pro will also apparently have a display that curves around the phone, similar to that of Vivo’s waterfall display on the Nex 3.
On the back of the device, you will see the familiar leica branding but in a revamped camera cut out that is sure to divide opinions. In a tweet by our favourite leaker @universeIce a couple of months ago, it can be deduced that the mate 30 Pro will come with two 40-megapixel sensors, along with an 8-megapixel sensor and a ToF sensor as well.
Both the Mate 30 Pro and regular Mate 30 will be utilizing Huawei’s new Kirin 990 chipset, which as we all know is 5G compatible. Can we expect to see a 5G version of the device? Most definitely, but whether or not it’ll be at launch remains to be seen. As for the Mate 30 Lite, it’s basically the Nova 5i Pro, which was launched back in July, and as such, will feature the Kirin 810 chipset.
While the design of the devices is one thing, the big question mark will be about the software that comes with the device. With Google all but confirming that the Mate 30 series cannot be shipped with official Google apps, it’ll be interesting to see just how Huawei get around this. Their smartphones home in China have been without the Google Play store for years now, but for Android users in Europe and America however, this presents itself as a problem.
