Will 2019 see Uber turning to scooters?

There are ongoing talks between Uber and unspecified electric scooter rental business. Could either be Lime or Bird, thus far there are no confirmation just yet. However, with Uber’s rapid expansion to be known as the go-to destination for all on-demand transportation needs, the company acquiring another transport business makes sense.

According to the The Information , there are reports that Uber has held talks with Bird on a possible “multibillion-dollar” acquisition and, as a fallback, Uber has also been talking to smaller competitor Lime as well. Uber’s interest in Lime was proved through partnership between both companies during summer this year where the electric scooter service can be found on Uber’s app now.

Further talks suggest that Uber is hoping to lock both deals with Lime and Bird before the end of the year. Bird CEO Travis VanderZanden has told the reporters that “Bird is not for sale,” which may or may not be a negotiating tactic.

Of course, there are no guarantee that an agreement can be achieved between all three companies just yet, but it does seem like 2019 will be the year with Uber in a commanding position near the top of the nascent scooter-sharing market.
