Toyota will be using Nvidia’s artificial intelligence platform, Drive PX, to develop self-driving vehicles over the next few years.

While Nvidia is well known for their GPUs for the gaming industry, recent years has seen the chipmaker popular within the automotive sector for providing the brain for autonomous driving technology.

Previously, Nvidia announced partnerships with Audi and Mercedes in self driving technology as well.

The Drive PX platform fuses data from cameras, lidar, radar and other sensors. The system can then use AI to understand the 360-degree environment surrounding the car, localise itself on an HD map and anticipate potential hazards while driving. The system software receives updates over the air, so latest data is synced to build on the intelligence.

Toyota, which last year set up a U.S.-based Toyota Research Institute (TRI) to focus on AI and robotics, envisions a dual-track development of autonomous technology. It is simultaneously developing full self-driving cars while also working on what it calls “guardian angel” partially autonomous technology that may still require involvement from drivers.
