I know, my eyes are welling up too. Would Malaysians pay over ten grand for a tablet? According to Microsoft officials, consumers looking for a high performance product that checks all the boxes based on their needs and comes in a form factor that is appealing will definitely do so. A claim we would tend to agree as well, PC purchase in the country currently stands at 50% for value proposition devices and the other half for high performance devices, data derived based on PC shipment.
At a private launch today held at the red brick walled Glass House. For the first time in Malaysia, Microsoft showcased their most powerful tablet in their arsenal, the Surface Pro 4. Distinctively recognisable with its unique design, kick stand and that signature magnesium coloured case. There is a radical difference on the 4th generation Surface compared to the previous iteration, for instance the Pro 4 has grown slightly from Pro 3 now in 12.3 inch with 3:2 aspect ratio. With PixelSense users will get one of the brightest display on a tablet, it features 267ppi and 1300:1 contrast ratio supports 100% sRGB colour and has 5 million pixels.
The new Surface offers 30% better than earlier version thanks to the 6th generation chip-sets from Intel. Stack the Surface Pro 3 next to it, you won’t see the difference at first, look closer and you will notice the Surface Pro being slimmer only limiting due to the USB 3.0 port slot situated on the side much quieter, runs smoother and has nine hours of battery life. There is also a mini display port ans a microSD card reader, on the top corner you will find the stereo headphone/microphone jack.
Worth Its Weight
Now lets talk about the aforementioned top of the line Surface Pro 4 i7 512GB edition is priced RM9799 without the type cover which is sold separately for RM529. So, what is so special about the top of the line from Microsoft well for one is the horse power this device packs, Core i7, 512GB memory and 16GB RAM can be found in some premium gaming machines, graphics are also pushed up a level with Intel Iris Graphics 540 comparatively for RM3,999 you can opt for the Core M with 128GB and 4GB in memory and RAM. If you need power, performance and all the optimisation Windows 10 delivers on a tablet form factor and if you can afford it, then the question should be…..why not?

There are of course in between sku’s to choose from an i5 128GB with 4GB RAM for RM4449, i5 256GB with 8GB RAM for RM5799, i7 256 GB with 8GB RAM for RM7099 to the i7 256GB with 16GB RAM for RM8049. Microsoft is providing 6 iterations of the Surface Pro 4 depending on the processing power and your own usage environment the selections are available.

Need Not Look Further
The Surface Pro is bordering as a full fledged notebook, it has a USB 3.0 port, mini displayport and even a microSD card reader rarely you will find them all in conventional tablet. Slip in the type cover and you will not know the difference, earlier version of type covers were flimsy and plasticy the much improved redesigned magnetic keyboard is the best we’ve seen so far.

Spacing between keys and tactile response from each keys is as close as you will get to a laptop, the touch pad has also received special treatments from Redmond. Another leap in innovation that we see on the new Surface Pro is the Surface Pen, perfectly weighted,1024 levels of pressure sensitivity, easy on the fingers and writes effortlessly like how you would on a ball pen.

What’s new is also the eraser on its end which can be used to erase scribbles directly on the screen like a eraser would or just press the top to click to open OneNote (it does a few more tricks too)
Cortana is still not available in Malaysia, but Windows Hello is- an all in one facial authentication front facing 8mp camera, no more remembering passwords for different devices. With Windows 10 the best operating software from Microsoft yet, the Surface Pro has an added advantage compared to other brands as this productivity device was built by Redmond with the OS in mind.

There are suites of features on the Surface Pro 4 like the dual camera, gyro sensors, Dolby sound and Windows 10 Pro, we will deep dive on all this when we do a hand on review in our upcoming issue.
Clearly the device is optimised for Windows 10, smooth as butter, responsive to every command either with touch, keyboard or stylus. This is truly a possible laptop replacer.
