So before we go into why there won’t be any YouTube Rewind this year, here’s a brief information on what is YouTube Rewind.
YouTube Rewind is a video series produced and created by YouTube and Portal A Interactive. These videos are an overview and a recap of each year’s viral videos, events, trends, and music. Each year, the number of YouTube personalities featured has increased.
So I was a big fan of YouTube Rewind when it first started but I kinda stopped watching after 2017 because 2017’s Rewind was not good and when I found out who will be in the 2018’s Rewind, I decided to not watch as I recognised no one there. Or most of them. None of my favourite YouTubers were featured. I’m getting old, yes, shut up.
Last year, 2019’s Rewind, YouTube decided to just compile the best online moments of 2019 instead of making an actual Rewind. Simply because most of us didn’t like 2018’s Rewind so YouTube just gave up I guess.
You’d think YouTube would try to make a Rewind this year because so much has happened in 2020. So much. Honestly so much. Maybe too much. Too much that YouTube decided again to not make another Rewind. Honestly, a smart call. I mean if I were them, I’d make that decision too cause where do I start?
2020 YouTube Rewind could’ve marked 10 years since it started but unfortunately has been cancelled. I’m not gonna lie, I was actually curious how they would make this year’s Rewind. It could’ve had potential. The company issued a statement acknowledging that “2020 has been different,” adding that “it doesn’t feel right to carry on as if it weren’t.”
Understandable. Although some good things has happened this year, for the most part, we’ve all been struggling. If YouTube did actually make a Rewind this year, I’m sure they’ll do their best to make people happy during these trying times.
No official word if Rewind will happen again next year so we’re just gonna have to wait and see till then. In the meantime, here is the last good YouTube Rewind for us to enjoy.
