18:9 Display Coming for the Next Phone in Xperia Line?

Japan Display Inc. (JDI)  announced the start of mass production for what they call a Full Active LCD display.

Featuring a slim bezel on all four sides, its noted to have a display aspect ratio of 18:9 for smartphones. According to a JDI statement, the width of the bottom bezel will be as narrow as the three sides, allowing for the size of a smartphone device to be nearly the same as the display size.

JDI is a joint venture between Toshiba, Hitachi and Sony. Prior to this announcement, there were speculations that Sony will be joining the LG G6 and Galaxy S8 in adopting a 2:1 screen ratio. While there hasn’t been any confirmation on that, it does seems like Sony could be getting the parts ready.

This LCD module is also noted to have thinner borders, a deeper black level, and allows users to operate even with wet fingers.
