Grab Food turns one; Merges with Grab App
It’s been a whole year since grab food hit the shores of Malaysia. 365 days of delivering food. 365 days of not quite getting it right.
That being said, in conjunction with their 1st anniversary, Grab announced today that GrabFood will be moving back “home” to its native Grab App, which is increasingly becoming an every day Super App. The move will see a more convenient app experience for partner restaurants and delivery partners as consumers no longer have to go back and forth between two apps.
“The early days of GrabFood was challenging, but we embraced the challenges and lessons learnt. Together with our partner restaurants, we organised uniquely localised campaigns that was aimed at delighting GrabFood customers with their favourite food, and soon, earned our way to Malaysian’s hearts. Since our launch last year, our orders have been steadily growing by 30% on a monthly basis and to date, we have completed more than two million deliveries! This is testament that our food delivery service has undoubtedly provided another layer of convenience to our customers everyday experience. Therefore, the move to integrate the GrabFood app with the Grab app will bring more value and opportunities to all who are part of GrabFood’s ecosystem.”
Sean Goh, Country Head of Grab Malaysia
In spite of its shortcomings, GrabFood is without a doubt the best option when it comes to food delivery in Malaysia. The collaborations they’ve made is testament to their dedication to being the best. Since launch, the number of GrabFood partner restaurants have grown from a modest hundreds to thousands of restaurants. They even have exclusive partners in the form of Village Park, Humble Chef, Murni Discovery and Salad Atelier.
With no shortage of promotions and with seemingly more to come, the merging of the GrabFood app with Grab will certainly increase the number of deliveries placed. With plans to penetrate into other cities as well, namely Penang Melaka, Johor Bahru, Kuching and Kota Kinabalu, more job opportunities will also be available. This should equate to more earnings for GrabFood’s fleet of delivery-partners, and Grab expects as much. It’s nice to see that they have the livelihood of delivery partners in mind in the midst of all this growth. I’m just worried about what happens when they’re atop of this mountain that they’re so aggressively scaling.
Have you ever wondered why there are so many promos on GrabFood? It’s no coincidence that Grab significantly cut down on their ride hailing promo codes the minute they gained monopoly via the acquisition of Uber. Could they have similar plans for GrabFood? As of right now, they’ve still got competitors in the food delivery game, and while Food Panda is notoriously bad, it’s the presence of competition that’s what’s keeping the promos coming. Yes, your blood pressure might go up every time you order from Food Panda, but i would suggest placing an order on the platform every now and then, just to keep things competitive.
The progressive migration of the GrabFood app into the Grab app will begin on the 17th of April and the service will be expanding to the aforementioned five cities beginning April 22nd.
