Just as Health director general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah shared some pretty worrying news about the increasing rate of road accidents in Malaysia, yet another road accident has occurred, this time at the Setia Alam toll and it looks pretty damn bad.

Barely 2 days after interstate travel was reallowed, a Proton Persona and a Honda HR-V collided into each other at the Setia Alam toll plaza today. Details about the accident, brought to light by Facebook group Friends of Setia Alam, are scarce at the time of writing but based on pictures alone, it definitely not something both the drivers will be able to kao tim amongst themselves.

The front of the Proton Persona is completely wrecked, while the Honda HR-V is left turtled right where you’d expect the toll boom gate to be. Thank God it was the Smart Tag lane and not the lane with a manned booth (though you barely see those these days anyway).

You can’t help but to ask what on earth is going on with Malaysian drivers these days. Is it possible to forget how to drive after a couple of months of not driving? Or is this the result of our driving licences being notoriously easy to buy?

An average of 738 road accidents a day is shockingly high, and maybe we’ve forgotten this but we all bear a responsibility not just to ourselves, but to other motorists to ensure that everyone gets to their destination safe and sound.
