Xiaomi Underscores Sustainability Drive In 2024 ESG Report

Xiaomi Corp has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability, technology inclusivity, and climate action through the release of its 2024 Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) Report, now in its seventh edition.

The company’s sustainability roadmap includes a major R&D push, with RMB24.1 billion (approx. RM14.48 billion) invested last year alone. Xiaomi also highlighted its Smart Factory and EV Factory, which now operate with 81% automation, significantly exceeding industry norms.

Xiaomi’s ESG report also stressed efforts to support digital accessibility, with advanced features in its Xiaomi HyperOS to aid users with visual and hearing impairments. For example, the upgraded TalkBack feature now offers real-time narration using AI-based optical character recognition.

On climate action, Xiaomi said its operations obtained ISO 50001 Energy Management certification and reported a reduction of 3,378 tonnes in carbon emissions by shifting from air to sea and rail transport. Its suppliers must now meet carbon reduction targets and hit 100% renewable electricity usage by 2050.

In terms of waste management, Xiaomi has already achieved 95.94% of its five-year goal to recycle 38,000 tonnes of e-waste, with over 1.3 million devices recycled in China and trade-in programmes active in nine international markets. Its Smart Factory also achieved a 99.35% waste diversion rate, earning it the TÜV Rheinland three-star Zero Waste to Landfill certification.

The Group said it will continue innovating with sustainable materials, citing the Xiaomi 14T which uses bio-based lemon residue and recycled metals in its construction.
