A more accurate way of measuring steps while you walk, jog or run has to be if the chips are installed in those track shoes you wear.

Well whatdya think, Xiaomi has just done that with the collaboration of Intel with an IPCore chip installed on every Mijia smart shoes the company just released. It is calibrated to the pressure your body weight gives each time you step. The shoes will collect information after the first step you make and the  sensors will measure motion giving accuracy to the data collected.

Users can then choose for the information to be sent to their smartphone with a special mobile application where they can keep track of daily number of steps, traveled distance and the number of burned calories. A replaceable CR2032 battery powers the chipset.

The smart shoe can be an option people can consider over the trackbands but worth keeping in mind is the wear and tear of the shoes, which are much higher than the wrist units.
