Xiaomi Shipped 10 Million Phones Last Month

Xiaomi might have broken its record. According to CNET, Xiaome announced that they shipped over 10 million phones in September. While it’s not quite on track to topple Huawei’s dominance in the market yet, it seems like Xiaomi might be catching up.

Xiaomi recently released two new phones, the Mi Mix 2 and Mi A1, a day before Apple’s announcement for iPhones. The Mi Mix 2 is a bezel-less phone noted to be Xiaomi’s most expensive phone to date; the Mi A1 is a budget Android One phone created for developing markets such as India.

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun noted that demand is so high that supply for some models remains tight. “We have good news to share: More than 10 million Xiaomi phones were shipped in September, marking the first time in our history we have crossed 10 million units in a single month! This means our business has achieved a new level,” said Lei Jun.

Xiaomi has gone from being the most popular phone to ranking 4th amongst its fellow Chinese brands in global market sales. In comparison, Huawei has shipped 73 million devices from January to June this year, averaging about 12 million phones every month. Currently reigning amongst Chinese manufacturers in global sales, right after Apple and Samsung, is Huawei, followed by Oppo and Vivo.

Analysts say the sudden surge in popularity for Xiaomi could be the result of increasing momentum in the India market.
