Due to the rising demand for electronic vehicles within the next three to five years, electronics manufacturing giant Foxconn has confirmed its intentions to build a 20 million sq ft flat screen factory in Racine County, Wisconsin. This will inevitably bring a large number of commerce-related traffic to the region, leading to Foxconn requesting state officials to consider a self-driving vehicle lane to efficiently move things to and from the factory.

While still in consideration, Michael Pyrits, spokesman for the department says that it is definitely something that they are thinking about. If they successfully implement this, it will allow driverless trucks to continually shuttle materials between the Foxconn plant and Milwaukee’s Mitchell International Airport at any time of the day.

The proposal for driverless lanes is made possible by the fact that Wisconsin had already planned to overhaul and widen a heavily used portion of Interstate 94.
