If any of you out there are like me, you spend hours on end binge watching Netflix. It’s nothing to be ashamed of! The streaming service has pretty much everything, from good ol’ Disney classics to iconic Hollywood blockbusters and of course, a slew of Netflix original content.
In fact, the company has been investing heavily in original content over the last couple of years or so in anticipation of Disney, Apple and other big players entry into the market. That being said, you tend to see certain shows that you know for a fact are not Netflix originals carrying the Netflix Original Series moniker. So what exactly is going on here? I mean come on, Peaky Blinders isn’t a Netflix Original Series, right?
It turns out that a lot of the shows and films that carry the “Netflix Original Series” moniker aren’t exactly as implied. Peaky Blinders for example, is produced by the BBC and created/written by Steven Knight. Orange is the new black? A Lionsgate production. The list goes on.
What Netflix does is use the term original as a descriptor for content (movies/series) that are both exclusive to its platform and aggregated from other studios after first being made available somewhere else. So, not really original then.
The streaming giants basically acquire the means of distribution for all these shows and use the term to delineate content. That’s why shows like Titans and Star Trek Discovery are considered Netflix Originals internationally despite them airing DC Universe and CBS All Access, respectively, in the US.
