After recently releasing their latest update to WhatsApp which doubled the limit of people on video calls to eight participants, now it looks like WhatsApp is ramping it up even more.

A new video calling feature has been discovered in the beta version of the desktop app, first spotted by WABetaInfo. The beta shows the web app will be able to support video calls with up to 50 people, making it a worthy competitor to Zoom, Google Meet, Skype, and the plethora of video-conferencing options out there. I say it’s a worthy competitor, because out of all the apps out there, I’m sure WhatsApp reigns supreme in terms of users. It just makes it all easier.

How it works exactly, is by transferring users to Facebook’s new Messenger Rooms which allows for linked Messenger service and video calls with bigger groups.

In the WhatsApp menu itself, it redirects people to Facebook Messenger Rooms where they can create a virtual meeting room in the Facebook Messenger Room, and invite people to join. Users will be able to do this directly from the WhatsApp Web app, so that’s nice. But it’s honestly just using Facebook Messenger Rooms with added steps.

As of now, we have no word as to when the beta feature will make its way to wide availability on WhatsApp Web. But if it’s anything like their eight-people limit update for video calls, we should expect it coming up very soon.
