Remember the long long (okay, so not that long, maybe before January 2016) time ago when WhatsApp used to charge users for US$ 0.99 annually for their services?

There’s been a message making its rounds claiming that their WhatsApp subscription has expired, and users can pay 99p (that’s the UK version) for a “lifetime subscription”.

PSA: Please delete and disregard. Or risk your bank account details getting stolen.

Now we are seeing news reports circling around UK so far, and we haven’t seen any variants locally, as of yet. This is how it looks like for our British counterparts.

As far as we are aware, WhatsApp is still free, and has been free globally since January 2016. These hoax links and messages could lead to scammers stealing your bank account details, or infecting your devices with malware.

This isn’t the first time, nor would it be the last time that users might get duped on information shared on WhatsApp, or dodgy messages coming through WhatsApp. Users have to keep vigilant and WhatsApp gave some helpful tips to look out for.

WhatsApp says to look out for these points when you suspect a hoax:

• The sender claims to be affiliated with WhatsApp.
• The message content includes instructions to forward the message.
• The message claims you can avoid punishment, like account suspension, if you forward the message.
• The message content includes a reward or gift from WhatsApp or another person.

A WhatsApp spokesman said: “We always advise you to block the sender, disregard the message and delete it.”
