ITS conclusive, the undisputed choice for premium screen quality is definitely OLED, a technology that was beyond reach for many just half a decade before is now within anyone’s grasp. From mobiles phones, gaming devices to TV screens, OLED or Organic Light Emitting Diode is now the poster boy for luxury displays, exuding visual reproduction in stunning vivid colours. That’s possibly why when Sony launched their 65″ A1 Bravia 4K HDR last year, the go-to technology choice that made their screens stand apart from the competition was OLED coupled with the X1 processor driving at the heart of the TVs.

This year, Sony is upping the ante with new expanded range of 4k HDR TV developed using the same technology, the A8F Sony announced at the launch here in Singapore, is the expanded family joining the A1 series. Its new and expanded 4K HDR television series is designed to deliver enhanced contrast, colour and clarity.

Riding on its success with the A1E series, Sony intends to continue bringing premium selection of OLED TV with A8F range in 65″ and 55″ which inherits most of the unique features found on the former version.

For instance the Acoustic Surface technology that animates sound by vibrating the screens giving the sound effects a more realistic tone, other models place speakers either at the sides of bottom of the display, Sony has the woofers in the centre right behind the panels.

Compared to conventional TV in this sense LCD, the OLED a far superior technology on the A8F series produces an incredibly detailed picture with deep blacks, rich and realistic colours and edge to edge wide viewing angle. Having being in the industry for more than half a century lends hand in knowing the technology enough to know what it takes in making a good TV. Although Sony does not makes its own panels, its the engine behind which reproduces the picture quality that viewers expect to see on the investment that matters most. This is where the X1 processor excels, precisely able to control the 8 million OLED pixels for a stunning output of a 4K HDR picture and pairing the audio in tandem with the visual effects.

Premium Technology Made Affordable

While the OLED’s were the piece de resistance for the day, Sony did have the more affordable 2018 LCD screen TV line-up for mortals like me offering a wider variety of large screen premium 4K HDR televisions. The new X9000F series, equipped with the X1 Extreme processor, will be now be available in 85’’, 75’’, 65’’, 55’’ and 49’’ class.

Sporting the X-Motion Clarity Techology, the issue of motion blur on larger screens is eliminated, for the uninitiated motion blur occurs when we watch shows with fast action sequences and things get blur or words turning into black lines. During the demonstration, Sony execs showed how a moving train without the technology had the words on the sides completely blur out when it started moving compared the TV screen with X-Motion Clarity. Pretty impressive!

Both the A8F and the X9000F series uses Android TV operating system Oreo version, Netflix ready, has voice search feature, compatible to Google Assistant and Google Home speakers and comes with Dolby Vision. Sony Malaysia has not indicated price range for the models yet, but will be making them available from April onward.
