Prone to losing your keys or rather forgetting them? Well, soon you won’t need to have them on your person to access your vehicle, because Hyundai has just announced that it will begin rolling out smart fingerprint technology in 2019.

The first Hyundai to get this nifty feature will be the all-new Santa Fe. It will be released in the first quarter of this year.

How It Works?

To get into your Hyundai, all you need to do is to place your finger on a sensor located on the door handle. Starting the car works similarly, with another sensor located on the dashboard to the right of the steering wheel (the common location of a push-start button).

Plus, the system will also be able to automatically adjust seating position, infotainment features, and side-view mirror angles based on the scanned fingerprint data. Yes, this means they can preset according to the individual driver.

According to Albert Biermann, president and head of research and development division of the Hyundai Motor Company,

“In the future, Hyundai Motor plans to further expand the application of the technology to allow the adjustment of temperature, steering-wheel position, and many other features which will be tailored to driver’s preferences,”

“This will ultimately offer quality driving experience to each and every Hyundai customer.”

According to the Korean carmaker, the system’s chance of misidentifying someone’s fingerprint is just one in 50,000. With that, Hyundai claims it is five times more effective than conventional car keys and smart keys.

Only select markets will receive it, but the company plans on using the technology on other models eventually.
