Never expected the trusted social media platform Twitter could fall victim to cryptocurrency scammers,who managed to override the security features and hack accounts. The hackers this time targeted high profile accounts to convince users to subscribe to their offerings.

In a published report by Tech Crunch, a number of high-profile Twitter accounts were simultaneously hacked by attackers to spread a cryptocurrency scam, early Wednesday.

Since the attack, Twitter has acknowledged the matter and responded “We are aware of a security incident impacting accounts on Twitter. We are investigating and taking steps to fix it. We will update everyone shortly,” it said in a tweet. During this time users could face problems to tweet or reset passwords while the company addresses the incident.

Hackers targeted giant accounts on Twitter with the likes of technology company @Apple, ride-hailing company @Uber, Democratic presidential candidate @joebiden, Former president @BarackObama, Amazon co-founder @jeffbezos, Tesla and SpaceX founder @elonmusk, Microsoft founder @billgates, and legendary investor @WarrenBuffet were all sending messages asking their followers to invest into the crpto offers. However, the accounts were quickly backed under their owners’ control and the compromised tweets sent out were quickly deleted, the report said.

This has been the most embarrassing attack on twitter who largely managed to overcome cybersecurity vulnerabilities till now, the incident goes to show the extent of cyber criminals and their ability to manipulate accounts and security. Its also made to know that the attackers managed to take over the victims’ accounts, and also changed the email address associated with the account to make it harder for the real user to regain access.
