Telegram have announced that they’re developing a group video calling service, due to launch later this year. They take a quick shot at Zoom at the same time, saying that current options offer either security or usability, but says their own iteration will offer both.

Telegram announced their plans, alongside news of them reaching 400 million monthly active users, doubling their user base in two years.

As to when the feature will be available, this is what Telegram had to say:

“When will they be ready? You‘ll be the first to know when we’re done, promise. So stop asking. 😈”

Quite cheeky, but I like it. Personally, I enjoy Telegram more out of the rest of my messaging apps, but people I know rarely use the service, and in turn opt for the more widely used WhatsApp. That isn’t stopping Telegram though, as they’re still actively working on bringing new features to their messaging platform.

They also announced a quiz mode to Telegram polls earlier this year, and now they’ve updated it with upgrades to quizzes with educational features. Users will be able to add explanations that appear as users respond to quiz questions, helping them learn from their mistakes or giving them more context.

And of course, they’ve added functionality to one of their most used featues; stickers. The new sticker directory is a sort of marketplace of stickers, where users will be able to search over 20,000 High-quality free Telegram stickers created in the last five years.

All in all, a substantial update. We’ll still have to wait for the group video call feature, but till then, we’re bound to the rest of the numerous video conferencing apps out there.
