The Olympics Council deliberated over months before deciding to delay the Tokyo Olympics by 1 year to 2021, this comes after many participating countries pulled out from the quadrennial event. All over the globe, large scale events are being either cancelled or postponed indefinitely, including Formula 1, UEFA Champions League, the English Premier League, NBA and other sporting events. The scale of the Covid 19 pandemic is still unclear, but most experts are predicting the situation to abate in the second half.
With such uncertainty looming for now, it will be hard to plan of coordinate a large scale regional or global event at this moment in time. But Taitra the organiser of Computex in Taiwan are confident that their hard work and experience planning for the regional technology event can be held this year but just slightly pushed further by three months. Taiwan despite being close proximity with China, the epicenter of the Covid 19, is largely spared by the infection due to strict containment efforts and border control. While the rest of the world is seething on the increasing cases that is doubling every day with even the WHO is uncertain when will the pandemic peak and tapper off, Taiwan is preparing of life after.
Taitra President & CEO, Mr. Walter Yeh, and TCA Secretary General, Mr. Enoch Du jointly announced, that COMPUTEX scheduled for June 2-6 will be rescheduled to September. The event to be held from September 28-30, at Taipei Nangang Exhibition Center is scheduled to host 5G and communication, smart solutions, gaming, and new technology. This announcement comes after McKinsey’s latest epidemic report that the epidemic in China and East Asia will be controlled at the beginning of the second quarter, and the epidemic situation in Europe and the United States will slow down in June.
Many Malaysians make a beeline to Computex every year with it being the closest tech event in the region, but with the pandemic many when asked decided to skip this year and focus in rebuilding their lives and businesses before planning for any travels. We have to commend Taitra for the optimism, but these are early days to make big million dollar bets based on a self interest report by an American consultant firm.
