Sonic, the beloved blue hedgehog, will officially be getting a sequel, as Paramount Pictures announced that development already started for the film.

The sequel will see Jeff Fowler return as director. Screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller are also returning to pen the sequel.

Since development for the film is still early days, no release date has been mentioned just yet.

Sonic the Hedgehog was released back in February 2020 and was met with mostly positive reviews. The character’s initial design had a lot of backlash, which led to a complete redesign that’s more faithful to its video game counterpart.

That effort was not done in vain, as the movie managed to top over $300 million worldwide. It set the record for the biggest opening for a video game film in the US and is still the second highest-grossing film in 2020.

It’s not been confirmed yet if the casts from the movie will return for the sequel, though it’s safe to say they likely will.

Sonic is one of the luckier movies, since it released in cinemas before lockdowns were initiated. It’s the only reason why it’s still the second highest-grossing film, too, as many other movies were delayed.

I’ve watched Sonic myself and thought the movie was pretty great. It’s definitely an enjoyable watch with either family or friends, but the movie is not without its flaws.

Without spoiling anything, the end credits did tease a potential sequel, so I definitely expected this to happen. More so with their box office numbers.

I’m definitely excited to see what they’ll do with the sequel, though I do hope they’d have better storytelling, too.
