Whatsapp has announced that some phones will soon have no access to the messaging platform, later this year. These devices include Windows phones, which won’t find Whatsapp support after 31st December, 2019. This will be followed by Android versions 2.3.7 or iPhone’s running anything older than iOS 7, which will come into effect on February 1, 2020. Well, at least they aren’t dropping this out of nowhere and gives people the time to change their devices before they’re not supported anymore.
On the topic of phones not being able to use certain software, Facebook have confirmed that it will no longer allow Huawei to pre-install any of it’s apps on their phones. And just to put things in perspective, Facebook also owns Instagram and Whatsapp. Arguably, three of the most used apps on mostly everybody’s devices.
And the fact that Huawei devices won’t have them anymore, could spell trouble.
No preinstall = no app because there’s no Google Playstore to download it from after setup. Even if there were, Facebook might have to decide outright, that Huawei devices are not going to be able to use their platforms and apps.
If this goes through, Huawei devices would also not have access to Whatsapp, one of the most used messengers worldwide. That in and of itself, is a massive hit to any possible software integrations with the ‘Hong Meng’ operating system that Huawei is working on. If other software just stops working on the phone, what’s the point? The apps people most want? Without any of the three apps, would a smartphone still be popular amongst the people? Even if the ban was thrown out, are people’s confidences ever going to return in Huawei? These are just some of the questions that Huawei has to answer.
But it looks like the Zuck is going to give Huawei a run for it’s money.
