Siri is being nudged off her crown as the most popular virtual assistant. Although latest figures shows she’s still dominates the field with 41.4 million monthly users in the US, user engagement has dropped 15% since the previous year.

Slowly taking the crown is Amazon’s Alexa, with monthly active users increasing by 325%, from a mere 0.8 million to 2.6 million monthly users. Cortana also sees an increase, from 0.2 million monthly users in the U.S. to 0.7 million.

Purely looking at those figures, the user base isn’t enough to overthrow Siri quite just yet. However, Siri is definitely losing users faster than other platforms are gaining them, considering Siri has lost 7.3 million users in the span of a year.

The report is based on data collected by Verto Analytics from over 20,000 US consumers. The data is collected from consumers who have agreed to their device being monitored, as well as the firm’s survey data.

Overall, the study results show an increasing popularity for assistants associated with voice computing at home, compared to assistants programmed into smartphones. Amongst the apps most widely used with voice controls, are Chrome, Google Maps and the Google Play Store. Outside of Google, the other top apps launched after assistant usage were Facebook, Messages, and Safari.

By user base, the study found the elderly population in the 45 – 55 and 55+ age groups spend more time using assistants compared to other age groups.

The study only looks into assistant usage on mobile apps. Home and desktop figures isn’t known. Verto also isn’t able to detect usage figures for Google Search app, so figures for Android usage might be skewed.

It remains to be seen if Siri might see more usage with the launch of HomePod later this year.
