
Singapore recorded 1111 Covid 19 case bringing the total to 9125 in the island nation. This is the largest single day spike seen in the country which was initially praised for its efforts in fighting the spread.
Official media channel, CNA reported that the vast majority of the cases were work permit holders living in worker dormitories this was based on preliminary figures released by the Ministry of Health. Singapore has been grappling with managing the outbreak among the workers and looks like things are getting serious, as daily cases continue to rise. With this latest number, cases in the tiny nation now far exceeds of those of any other ASEAN country.
As of 20 April, the figures were classified as 6075 case coming from the quarters, 339 work permit holders not living in the quarters, 1031 community cases and 569 imported. The country also has reported 11 deaths with 23 in intensive care unit. Containment is primarily focused on the foreign worker barracks with optional quarantine centres are currently being procured to alleviate the medical facilities.
The country depends highly on workers outside the country for construction and other labour intensive tasks, workers are mainly from Bangladesh, Indonesia and India.
