Shopee Code League 2021 Brings The Region’s Best Tech Talents to Battle

Shopee Code League is back this year as it proceeds its venture to nurture tech talents and upskill workforces by gathering like-minded communities for an intense competition of problem solving and knowledge sharing in the world of coding.

This effort answers the necessity for tech talent after the 2021 Market Outlook by Randstad reported that the global economy will need 149 million new tech roles by 2025 as businesses shift online.

For international collaboration and exchange, Shopee Code League this year will feature a bigger talent pool as coders from China will be joining participants from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, the Philippines and Taiwan. Shopee Code League attracted an astounding participation of over 21,000 coders last year.

Shopee Code League, the largest code-from-home League in Southeast Asia and Taiwan, will be on from March 6 to 20 and will see teams of 2 to 4 people striving in three virtual competitions across data science, data analytics, and algorithms.

The Shopee Code League persists to garner the support of local governments and public organisations across the region including the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), with the common goal of advancing the digital economy.

“Shopee Code League was conceptualised with the aim to develop a workforce which will be ready for the future economy. With this in mind, the League will facilitate the exchange, learning, and development of new skills, ” said Ian Ho, Regional Managing Director of Shopee. “In 2020, we saw around 3,000 Malaysian participants with one team making it to the top 10. We hope more will take part this year to learn from like-minded talents from other countries.”

Tech talent development has always been one of our pillars at MDEC as we continue to lead Malaysia’s digital economy forward.

Our goal is to have the youth drive digital innovation for all and, to achieve that, we must equip them with the right tools and skill sets as well as provide them with access to the digital platforms and solutions, ” adds Surina Shukri, Chief Executive Officer of MDEC.

The League has two categories which are Open and Student. The top ranked team in each category will win SGD3,000 (around RM9,120) and a chance for a full-time or internship placement with Shopee. There will also be a special prize of SGD500 (around RM1,520) for the top-ranked women’s team of both groups as the competition seeks to encourage diversity and inclusion of women in tech.

Apart from the competitions, Shopee and its training partners will hold a series of free training workshops starting February 19 onwards to upskill and facilitate knowledge sharing amongst participants.

Registration for Shopee Code League 2021 is now open until 12 p.m. of March 5 and is free to all students and professionals.
