School Prefect Election: Proposal In Consideration

In response to the suggestion by Indera Mahkota MP Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah, the Education Ministry has announced its intention to explore the possibility of introducing internal elections for the selection of school prefects.

Deputy Minister Lim Hui Ying welcomed the proposal, emphasizing the need to foster early exposure to election processes among school students.

Saifuddin highlighted the importance of promoting political literacy among school children.

He also recommended studying past experience where they held a student-led election to elect for secondary school prefect.

He emphasized the significance of familiarizing youth with the electoral process before they reach voting age, emphasizing the need for practical measures to enhance political awareness.

Deputy Minister Lim outlined the Education Ministry’s existing efforts to enhance students’ political literacy, including incorporating political studies in the History curriculum at the primary school level.

The focus is on developing critical thinking skills and fostering rational decision-making, aiming to nurture well-informed and engaged future citizens.
