Report of scammers using illegally acquired database of customers and luring them to visit their websites to either collect personal information or to partake in fake promotions is becoming a cause for concern.
Victims inadvertently get caught in these web of deceit and fall prey to unscrupulous bad hats who use technology to dupe innocent citizens. More so if they camouflage behind names that you wouldn’t suspect, in the latest scam scare, the scammers used Celcom and targeted mobile phone users.
“When it rains it pours” a saying referred to when your luck is down you get piled with more trouble. Celcom customers who are still reeling on the back of poor network coverage across the Peninsular and East Malaysia, have to now look out for scammers targeting subscribers on the network. It was reported that a selection of the telco’s subscribers received text messages on their mobile devices inviting them to head over to a fake Celcom site on the pretext of a chance to win big prizes. These manipulative sites then will require the users to share private details like credit card numbers and bank account particulars which the scammers will then harvest to sell to potential clients or hackers or even use it for their own fraudulent purpose.
Scammers are getting bolder in the pursuit to gaining their means, while mobile phone users have to be vigilant, company’s like Celcom have to take all efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice and also full proof customer database from leaking.
Celcom has issued a statement on the matter and cautioned subscribers to be on alert and be wary of such SMS’s.

We have recently received complaints of customers receiving SMS spam from scammers. These SMSes lead to fake Celcom websites that mislead customers into giving up personal information by promising big prizes. Please note that Celcom is not associated with any of these websites. If you come across any suspicious messages or websites claiming such, please call us at 019-601 1111 to make a report.
We caution our customers to remain on high alert against scammers and be careful about disclosing your personal details.
