Since the recent launch of the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, there has been much positives for Samsung, with new innovation and that all svelte edged design is slowly growing into the consumers minds.But the edge was already teased to customers when the smartphone maker launched the Galaxy Note in Malaysia early this year, we all suspected this could follow suit to their next iteration, the Galaxy S. After all the Note 4 and Note 4 Edge was a sparkling success for the brand and set itself apart from the different models in the market. There were many firsts in the Note that we also noticed introduced into the S6, PC.com to catch up with Lee Jui Siang, Vice President of Mobile, IT and Digital Imaging, Samsung Malaysia Electronics, to find out what thought process went behind the Korean brand to ramp up its game.

Lee Jui Siang: The GALAXY Note 4’s iconic S Pen takes the most advanced input device to the next level with a series of innovative enhancements. In fact, the S Pen

on the GALAXY Note 4 makes everyday tasks much faster and easier and introduces more intuitive functionality that enables users to select content at once and move it with ease. When paired with the new Smart Select and Snap Note features, users can easily copy, save, and share content with other users. These capabilities, along with other

features like Image Clip, Air Command, and the enhanced Air View, repositions the S Pen as a primary tool that users go to for more common, everyday mobile device use. The GALAXY Note 4 also offers an improved writing action that has doubled in sensitivity, recognising speed, tilt, and rotation for a smoother and more natural brush effect to emulate a fountain or calligraphy pen.

Lee:The GALAXY Note 4 continues Samsung’s legacy in design and provides the perfect mobile companion to even the most style conscious of users. As it is, Samsung has been moving towards providing products with similarities to analogue functions – in essence the very design heritage that the GALAXY Note series exudes. This design evolution has led to the coming of ‘Modern Sleek’, Samsung’s new visual theme for GALAXY devices. The idea here is to reinterpret modern lifestyles with the most essential in sleek concepts and state of the art design elements. Hence, the GALAXY Note 4, with its reinforced four-corner metal edges, creates a solid, yet slick look that offers improved shock resistance at the same time. This whole concept signifies a new milestone in mobile design that reflects careful study and consideration of consumer needs and industry trends.

Through our in-depth research, we discovered that most of GALAXY Note 3 users highly valued its unique note-taking features such as the large screen and the advanced S-Pen. Lee: Beyond the leading ideas we had put into the Note 4 based on our research, we also threw in the 2.5D glass screen, an inherited idea from the GALAXY S3. This, essentially, offers extra protection while perfectly complementing the device’s rich viewing experience. The GALAXY Note 4 has also inherited the Note 3’s design essence and taken it to the next level with a soft-to-the-touch leather texture that mixes well with the gentle curvature of the back cover for a more comfortable grip. It only makes sense for us to enhance what we have done and bring it to another level of form and function.

Lee: We are always evolving our approach to design and we consider the use of many different types of materials every time we develop a new product or line. After careful consideration with aspects such as overall design, weight, durability, interchangeable battery, and scratch resistance, the GALAXY Note 4 came up with the right balance by being encompassed in a combination of metal and plastic. We are committed to providing our mobile users with the best possible mobile devices on the market and, as such, carefully consider each choice we make with regards to which materials we use based on what makes the most sense holistically for each new device. Plastic offers many advantages to metal, especially with regards to providing users a more comfortable grip with a leather-like finish. With what we came up with, it fits in perfectly with our

new design philosophy for the GALAXY Note 4.

Lee: We considered a number of factors, such as consumer’s use case, design aspects, and production, and, ultimately decided to exclude the IP67 water and dust resistance feature at this time
