Review: Onkyo E700M, A Portable Hi-Res Audio Solution

A Great Package

If you’re after ear buds that can bring the most out of your FLAC files, these are just for you. Attention has been paid to the details here. Everything from the packaging to the material choice here screams ‘premium’ – as does the audio experience, which lives up to its Hi-Res promise. The semi-closed drivers bring out the best in live performances.

No all-rounder

The audio produced isn’t perfect though. The most glaring problem is the way the E700M handles lower frequencies. While they perform well with acoustic or vocal-driven songs, just about everything electronic feels a little dampened. It doesn’t feel like it was made for punchy beats but they more than make up for this by delivering a warm and accurate mid-range.

13.5mm Drivers – The housings used are large enough to accommodate 13.5mm neodymium drivers, allowing for some very rich sound.

Straight Jack – Though the E700M is very well constructed, some may prefer jacks that terminate in an L-shape

Inline remote – An inline remote makes it ideal for use with phones, but note the absence of volume controls.

Braided cables – There are integral to the E700M’s identity, but they’re bound to unravel over time.
