One of the biggest success story in the tech world is the Raspberry Pi family of product. Originally designed to be a single-board computer for cheap entry into the world of coding and computing, it has since been seen as a yardstick for tinkerers to work with in creating new and incredible projects, which some has seen the light of space, thanks to ingenuity of their creators. Now, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has announced a new version of their smallest computer – the Raspberry Pi Zero W.

The new board builds on the previously launched Raspberry Pi Zero – a computer no bigger than a stick of gum. What makes this version more interesting is the inclusion of an internal WiFi chip and antenna – all without adding any bulk or whatsoever to the board itself. The same chip also gives it Bluetooth connectivity to you don’t even need to attach any peripherals through the USB port. At the heart of the Raspberry Pi Zero W is a 1GHz single core Broadcom BCM2835 application processor and 512MB of RAM. It runs off a microSD slot, and it also features a wealth of I/O connectivity for users to play with:

• Mini HDMI
• Micro USB OTG
• Micro USB for power
• 40-pin HAT compatible header
• CSI camera connector
• Composite video header

The new feature does mean that the Raspberry Pi Zero W is a wee bit more expensive than its predecessor – it is retailing for USD 10 (approx. RM 42), which is still a bargain given the fact that the board is a whole computer than can run off simple USB power. Alongside the new board is also a new official plastic case, but thanks to the size of the Pi Zero W, it can virtually be installed anywhere.
