Students returning to public university have another reason to rejoin apart from meeting back with friends and continuing their academic, fees for semester and accommodation has been now reduced.

This will be a welcome news as many were looking forward to discounts from the Government due to the long lay-off, the Education Ministry has agreed to offer a 15% discount on hostel and 2019/2020 semester fees in efforts to reduce the burden of students. Hundreds of thousands of Uni going students will benefit from this sweeping announcement which was discussed in Parliament recently.

Many parents were delighted on the news and thanked the government on their supportive move. On the other hand parents who are sending their children to private Universities hoped the administrators will take this example and extend to students coming back. So far there has been no mention on fees as most Universities continue to charge as per normal despite some classes being conducted online. In response to request for lowering the fees, they have said that operation cost is high and lecturers are still being paid even during MCO.

To give a comparison, University Sains Malaysia charges approximately RM40,000 for a 3 1/2 years Bachelor of Arts course while Taylors University a private institution charges RM120,000. You can see why some parents are hoping these private education should be considerate and offer respite during these trying times instead of choke holding the parents.
