Toxicity in online games are part and parcel of the trade. From Dota 2 to LoL and CS:GO, no online gameis safe from toxic gamers. Although only a year old, Overwatch is no stranger to toxic gamers, with updates coming at a snails pace. In the latest Developer Update video titled ‘Play Fair, Play Nice’, game director Jeff Kaplan steers away from the usual updates like new contents and features.

Instead, Kaplan touches on the ever-growing level of bad behaviour in Overwatch and its plans on counteracting it. One way to tackle bad behaviour is through reporting, which Kaplan states is now also available on consoles as well. While some may say that reporting bad behaviour is a waste of time, Kaplan thinks otherwise. “To date, we have taken disciplinary action against over 480,000 accounts and 340,000 of those have been a direct result of players using the reporting system.”

Kaplan also had a message for toxic players, stating that bad people are not wanted in the game if they’re doing bad things. He also points out on the community being responsible for their own actions. One way to go about this is to have proper communication skills instead of flaming and cursing at your team.

Sadly, as Kaplan and his team have prioritised controlling bad behaviour, it means less time to work on creating new content. “The bad behaviour is making the game progress in terms of development on a much slower rate,” he said. When it boils right down to it, it’s the level of anonymity that breeds toxic players.
