OPPO Global Research Institute showcases the world’s first 5G live 3D video call using 3D structured light technology. The demonstration reproduces a 3D portrait image on a remote receiver from the structured-light 3D camera of an OPPO R11 phone. It also utilizes the 5G NR terminal prototypes from Qualcomm Technologies.

In the demo, the customized camera collects colour and 3D depth information from the target with the help of RGB. It then transmits this information under a 5G environment to display the target object on a remote display screen.
Bai Jian, Director of the Hardware Research Center of OPPO Research Institute says, “‘The success of the 5G video call utilising 3D structure light technology demonstrates our innovation, powered by the understanding of users’ need and cutting-edge technology.”
Bai Jian adds that OPPO expects to commercialise this 3D structured-light technology to smartphones in approximately six months.
5G technology features high speed (eMBB), large capacity (mMTC), and low-latency (URLLC). OPPO wishes to be one of the first to integrate the 5G network with other new imaging and sensor technologies. Examples include Ubiquitous Reality, Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, and Joint Reality. Additionally, 3D structured-light technology will also have uses in handling secure payments, or 3D reconstruction.
