Differently abled people, or Orang Kurang Upaya (OKU) will get a discount of between RM10 and RM15 for prepaid and postpaid mobile service packages and a discount between RM10 and RM44 for certain fixed line packages. Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said that the initiative would be implemented through government cooperation with major telecommunications service providers and fixed line service providers.
It is among the government’s initiatives to ensure that all levels of society are not left behind in the face of the development of the digital world revolution and the Industrial Revolution 4.0, where the use of the latest technology applications encompasses all aspects of life in the future, he said. This comes after his appearance at Malaysia Tech Week 2019, so it makes sense to offer such discounts for the differently abled.
“The Government is very concerned about the disabled and want to ensure that they also benefit from the advantages of the digital economy and not be left behind in upgrading business online through their technology,” he said at a Hari Raya Aidilfitri Communications and Multimedia Ministry here today.
When asked about the execution of the initiatives, Gobind said it would be announced soon.
Gobind in a statement on discounts for the disabled said the company Celcom, Digi, Maxis and uMobile offer discounts for postpaid packages while YTL offers discounts for pre-paid packages. For fixed line services, Telekom Malaysia offers a discount of RM22 to RM44 for Streamyx packages and RM10 for Unifi packages while Celcom will give a RM10 discount for Home Wireless package, he said.
“I would like to thank the telecom companies for taking proactive steps to produce and implement these packages to assist this initiative,” he said.
