Oculus Shuts Down VR Film Section

Oculus is closing down their VR film section Story Studio.

In a blog post, Oculus wrote “we’ve decided to shift our focus away from internal content creation to support more external production.”

The Facebook owned company remains that they are committed to growing the VR film ad creative content ecosystem.

“Now that a large community of filmmakers and developers are committed to the narrative VR art form, we’re going to focus on funding and supporting their content. This helps us turn our internal research, development, and attention towards exciting but unsolved problems in AR and VR hardware and software.”

Story Studio started as a way to explore possibilities into storytelling in VR form. They started creating VR shorts, including Lost, Henry, and Dear Angelica, as a way to kickstart the VR film industry, and to bring more investments into VR.

Oculus will be investing $50M to exclusively fund non-gaming, experiential VR content. They will also provide resources and programs through creators programs to help creators get started, including video tutorials, production and distribution tips, best practices for VR development, and chances to connect with leaders in the community.
