NVIDIA Creates Super-Efficient Supercomputer for Self-Driving Cars

NVIDIA released a new chipset specifically designed for self-driving cars called the Xavier. This new system-on-chip features a proprietary octacore processor, a computer vision accelerator as well as Team Green’s latest ‘Volta’ GPU architecture.

CEO Jen-Hsun Huang was extremely enthusiastic about the Xavier. At the GPU Technology Conference Europe, he stated, “This is the greatest SoC endeavor I have ever known and we have been building chips for a very long time.”

The Xavier is designed on the 16nm FinFET process, giving it enough performance and efficiency to replace the company’s previous dual-SoC ‘DRIVE PX 2’. In terms of performance,  it’s capable of 20 trillion operations per second using just 20 watts of power.

The company expects the Xavier to go into production by the end of 2017.
