There has been reports that airlines have been charging higher than normal during the Recovery Movement Control Order, those flying to Sabah or Sarawak have complained of overcharging.
It is understood during the early days of RMCO planes were required to follow standard operating procedures and only allow limited number of passenger, however with the lifting of the limit there should not be any reason to continue asking people to pay more for tickets. Senior Minister, Datuk Sabri Yaakob was baffled why the airlines continued to maintain high rates for its East Malaysia flights when they are now allowed to take full flights.
A number of airlines have gone on to hike up their fees 50-100% from pre-MCO, those who were desperate to return had no choice but to pay the exorbitant rates. The airlines have been struggling to regain passenger capacity since being grounded and Covid-19 compliance is only adding more pressure to the bottom line, this could a reason for the price hikes.
However, they are reminded of social obligation and give priority to locals who have been under house arrest for 3 months. They could be frontliners, students, essential service workers who only want to go home to see their family. Apart from that if the airlines want domestic travel to take-off in a big way, they should start offering good deals instead of ripping people off.
