Nintendo has just released some key specifications for their upcoming Switch game console/tablet. It looks like the rumours were true – this NVIDIA Maxwell powered gaming platform will display games in 1080p 60FPS when docked but will downscale to 720p on its 6.2″ LCD screen when used as a tablet. Maxwell is one generation behind in terms of power efficiency, so the 4310mAh battery would be put to better use on the lower resolution.
Expect the Switch to be extremely lightweight. With the Joy Cons attached, it’ll be less than 400 grammes, but without them it’s about 100 grammes lighter. Dual storage is expected, with 32GB of in-built NAND for core applications available as well as expandable storage. This will be handled via a microSDXC, meaning huge storage space options like 128GB, 256GB and possibly higher if your budget allows. Game cards are the expected format for physical media.
Highspeed 802.11AC Wifi and Bluetooth 4.1 are your wireless connectivity options on the Switch, with a sole USB C port when it’s being used as a tablet. It’ll also have speakers and a touch-enabled screen. Docked, it can be connected via its USB 3.0 port, 2 USB 2.0 ports and HDMI.
The Switch will be launched on the 3rd of March 2017 with a price tag of US$299.
